Supplements:
At Ashworth Chiropractic Centre, we believe that your care does not end when you walk out the clinic door. Supporting your body from the inside out between treatments is vital for optimum healing. By nourishing your joints and muscles from within, you can achieve a faster recovery, long-term stability and overall better health.
Finding the right fit for you: While these products are excellent options for general health, every individual body is unique. If you would like to know exactly which supplements are best suited to your specific needs, then we will need to sit down together and review your medical history, underling conditions and any current medications. If you are ever in any doubt about adding a new supplement to your routine, we stronly advise speaking directly with your GP. Below, we have outlined our most commonly recommended supplements, including exactly who they are suitable for and, just as importantly, who should avoid them.
InHealth Supplements: We recommend sourcing your supplements through InHealth Supplements. This is a trusted supplier of supplements designed specifically for Chiropractic patients. These supplements support recovery by reducing inflammation and pain whilst increasing energy and providing the building blocks necessary for repair. This website also contains extremely helpful and informative videos explaining how each of these supplements works. Debbie herself also sources her supplements for her own health from InHealth.
To get started, go to InHealth Supplements and create a New Patient account and select "Debbie Giddings" from the drop-down menu. This will give you access to a 10% subscription discount and unlock free UK shipping on orders over £30.00.
Below is a list of my most commonly recommended products, which are considered keystones to your overall health:
Vitamin D3 + K2: I recommend this supplement to almost all my patients. It is key to ensuring strong healthy bones. It is especially important for patients who are:
-
Non-Caucasian
-
Over 65 years of age
-
Obese
For more information on the product, please click here. However, this supplement is not suitable for people with Sarcoidosis or recurrent kidney stones, or for people on Warfarin. If you are in any doubt, please consult your GP.
Magnesium Duo Plus: This contains Magnesium citrate and Magnesium glycinate, which are the most researched forms of Magnesium and the most cost-effective. It also contains vitamin B6, which is required for Magnesium to enter the cells of your nervous system, muscles and bones. Magnesium contributes to the normal functioning of the nervous system, as well as muscle function, energy-yielding metabolism, protein synthesis, psychological function and the maintenance of bones. People who are low in magnesium often exhibit increased inflammation (more pain) and a lowered pain threshold. This causes symptoms and conditions such as:
-
Low back pain, Sciatica
-
Generalised pain or Fibromyalgia
-
Depression, Low Mood or Anxiety
-
Insomnia and Fatigue
-
Osteoporosis and poor bone health
-
High blood pressure
-
Muscle cramps
Being deficient in Magnesium mostly stems from modern diets which are low in nutrients. Antacids also significantly reduce the body's ability to absorb Magnesium. Modern lifestyles also result in persistent stress, which requires energy. This increases the demand for Magnesium.
Magnesium should be taken away from medications as it can affect the absorption of the medication. If in doubt, please consult with your GP. The most common side-effect of Magnesium is loose bowels. If this occurs then stop taking the supplement until your stools firm up. Then reintroduce one tablet a day. Gradually increase this to two tablets and then to three tablets a day. Patients with a history of gut issues may also need a slower introduction. There is also a product called Magnesium Duo, which does not contain B6. Use this supplement if you are already taking a supplement that contains B6, such as the Essential One-A-Day Multi.
Essential One-A-Day Multi: This was developed specifically for patients of Chiropractors, Osteopaths and Physiotherapists to obtain optimal results from treatment. It contains therapeutic doses of vitamins used in scientific research. This contains high dose B vitamins. This gives your body the energy to heal and make new tissue to recover from injury.
Evolved Collagen: Skin, bones, cartilage, tendons and ligaments are all made up of collagen. These need to be continuously renewed. Evolved Collagen contains amino acids, the building blocks for new collagen, and collagen peptides, which stimulate new collagen production. Evolved Collagen contains a high dose of the amino acid "Glycine", which is the biggest contributor to new connective tissue growth. It also contains Vitamin C, which maximises Collagen production. It is especially helpful in patients who are:
-
Stiff in the mornings
-
Poor sleepers
-
Recovering after injury
Occasionally, some people may feel a little sick when they first start taking Collagen. In that case, start with a lower dose and slowly build it up. Please consult with your GP first if you have any protein restrictions or Osteogensis Imperfecta.
Metaboost: This is another popular product. It combines Alpha Lipoic Acid, Acetyl L Carnitine and Superoxide Dismutase. This trio helps to protect the nervous system, supports longevity and combats age-related cognitive decline. It also has the added bonus of helping people to lose a little weight by aiding cellular metabolism, increasing energy production and reducing inflammation. It also helps to increase your energy. However, unlike the jittery buzz that caffeine may provide, it gives a sustained boost to your physical and mental stamina which lasts all day. It is best to take 2 tablets in the morning and 2 at lunch to maximise the absorption.
Cytoplan: A trusted supplier of practitioner-grade supplements. Cytoplan offers advanced cognitive and anti-aging support as well as Menopause and Peri-menopausal support supplements. It is also has extensive supplements for gut-related issues as well as joint health. There is an extremely wide-range of supplements which can be searched by condition on the website. Cytoplan also offers free nutritional advice - look for the tab under bestsellers. For a 35% discount off your first order, please contact my clinic on 01253 697687 for a code. I have listed below my most recommended supplements:
Glucosamine Complex: A high-potency Glucosamine supplement which provides natural and effective support for healthy joints and mobility.
Acidophilus Plus: A daily broad-spectrum pro-biotic containing 3.5 billion live bacteria to support a healthy microbiome.
Saccharomyces Boulardii: A probiotic yeast to help rebalance gut flora and reduce digestive upset. It is especially helpful against traveller's diarrhoea.
Menopause Support: This provides gentle plant-based oestrogen support to help support hormonal balance and well-being during the menopause.
Perimenopause Complex: A synergestic blend of natural nutrients and botanicals to support health during perimenopause.
Amazon: Here are a few products you can get on Amazon which are of good quality.
Oshun Electrolytes: This is a pure unflavoured electrolyte drink. It delivers four essential electrolytes (magnesium, sodium, potassium and chloride) plus 70+ trace minerals. It is available in a pump, and each 250ml bottle provides up to 200 servings. As the UK is experiencing more heatwaves, this is definitely useful to help keep you hydrated. It is available on Amazon.
Ashwagandha: This is an adaptogenic herb which has sleep-inducing qualities. It is especially helpful for those who "can't stop thinking" at night when they are trying to fall asleep. It also helps to regulate mood, fostering a feeling of calm. It can also help with memory and focus.
